Lenexa Justice Center

The design of the Lenexa Justice Center evolved through research and study of the City of Lenexa, the Lenexa Police Department and Municipal Court, and the proposed site itself. Driven by the City’s goals and the unique nature of the site and topography, it was clear this facility had specific challenges and opportunities to achieve its civic presence.
While the facility itself is tucked into a more level part of the site, three angled volumes extend beyond the building’s horizontal plane and reach skyward to mark its presence. These apertures will emit a lantern-like glow in evening, and provide ample sunlight throughout the day. They are located at three critical building components; the Community Room, the Municipal Courtroom, and the ‘bridge’. The bridge volume includes both the public lobby space and extends towards the secure side of the site. The west end of this volume is the staff hub – a double-height break room, kitchen, dining, and lounge space. The heartbeat zone of the building. The ‘bridge’ will at any moment house both members of the community and also City employees of the court and police department. It’s a gesture that symbolizes the connection between the citizens of the City and the people who serve them.
