WINDSOR POLICE DEPARTMENT

“This facility is an excellent example of the quality and variety of public safety projects submitted to this year's jury. Its design concept places a high priority on facilitating camaraderie among police personnel while providing opportunities for interaction and team building. The "police street" concept is expertly expressed through a vibrant interior scheme, crisp and warm, inviting colors with dynamic shapes and natural light to create a visually stimulating and elegant operational environment. The architecture's integration of pre-engineered technology, sustainable design principles, and light-filled exciting interiors creates a dynamic civic image for the police station, within a modest budget.”

—2011 AIA Justice Facility Review Jury’s Statement

Located in a rural northern Colorado community, the Windsor Police Department presented a unique opportunity to build a new facility that would reflect their progressive policing philosophy. With an emphasis on programmatic efficiencies and flexible growth, the primary goal of this project was to create a socially integrated facility that encourages interaction within the department as well as with the community. Replacing existing police operations originally located in the basement of the community’s Town Hall, this is sited adjacent to the community recreation center.

The building’s two primary masses intersect to form a 'social hub' that encourages interaction among police personnel. The central corridor organizes internal operations along the 'Police Street,' and at the building's public entrance, this award-winning iconic building opens to the town’s main street as a welcoming gesture, defining a new civic plaza and renewing a sense of community.
