South Coast Plaza in Santa Ana, California is the site of the latest Room & Board and Retrospect Home Furnishings store.
The existing 48,000 SF, multistory building was gutted on the interior and reclad on the exterior with corrugated galvanized metal shingle panels. The 2 new building entries function as transparent showcases, juxtaposing against the solidity of the building mass. The structure at both entries has been deconstructed, turning an existing interior space into an exterior courtyard, taking full advantage of the California climate.
The interior layout is organized around a central skylighted stair, bringing daylight into all interior spaces. Perimeter furniture vignettes open into entry courtyards creating a loft like residential feel that reinforces the classic lines of the company’s modernist furniture.
