Denver Art Museum Debuts New Hamilton Building Shop

New, expanded space adds café, new merchandising plan

(Denver, Colo.)– The Denver Art Museum (DAM) opened its new, expanded Museum Shop inside the Hamilton Building that will enhance visitors’ experiences with added space for browsing, a larger selection of distinctive merchandise and a casual café area to provide a welcoming space for reflection and refreshment.

“This is an unbelievably gorgeous shop–a well-designed environment for having fun shopping,” said Cathey M. Finlon, president of Denver Art Museum. “Our expanded space has hand-selected items found nowhere else–fabulous jewelry by national and regional designers and unique items from all over the world – plus excellent souvenirs and great art books.”

Designed by Roth + Sheppard Architects–known for their award-winning retail and  restaurant spaces including Room & Board, Max, Skye Boutique, Vesta Dipping Grill and  Cucina Colore–and handcrafted millwork by High Country Millwork, the new Museum Shop features high-end design details, including a fully-lit LED wall for larger vases and art objects, a kids’ corner, a book nook and a new space for art and design-focused periodicals. The expanded jewelry display includes even more selections from local and national designers. A new café space serves gourmet coffee, drinks and prepared salads, sandwiches and other items from Mad Greens.

“This has been a great project to work on – it’s rare that an architect has the opportunity to work on another architects’ iconic building, thus we wanted to stay true to Daniel Libeskind’s original design concept,” said Jeff Sheppard, Principal of Denver’s Roth + Sheppard Architects. “In most retail locations, you start with a plain vanilla box – in this case, the space was already special so our objective was to maintain the  integrity of the  architecture while carefully inserting elements that enhanced the shopping and  dining experience.”

The new shop covers 5,600 square feet at the north end of the atrium, activating the entire lobby space. The DAM commissioned a site study to understand the traffic flow and visitor path at the museum. This study revealed the area to be the perfect location for an expanded shop with better visibility and visitation. The new location allows DAM to closely connect with the planned Clyfford Still Museum, which is slated to be built in the near future. This will help cement the notion of a complete cultural complex. The construction of the shop was paid for by outside funding.

“Our new design was created to extend  the visitors museum experience into the shop – where they can find books, jewelry and one-of-a-kind items that reflect the art collections and programming they enjoyed in the galleries,” said Greg McKay, manager of the Museum Shop.  “The new space also allows for a higher degree of customer service to provide a seamless experience at the DAM, and customers have the added benefit of knowing their purchase benefits the Museum.”
