Dania Algonquin

  • Algonquin, IL

Dania, a contemporary Scandinavian Designs furniture store, hired Roth + Sheppard Architects to re-brand their image.  This 40,000 S.F. big box retail prototype store is designed to meld the characteristics of Scandinavian Designs (the organic and the man made) by juxtaposing nature and the tectonic in a sequential layering system.  A wholistic design approach is reinforced by incorporating several sustainable design strategies including green roof, day lighting, radiant cool floor, thermosyphon induced ventilation and microclimate landscape zones.

The interior is designed to represent interconnected spaces within defined loft like volumes.  Each loft is defined by one of nine skylights creating a flexible interior that can be easily modified.

The exterior aesthetic is defined by a carefully proportioned massing and material palette to symbolically and physically represent the lost craft of furniture making.
