ALE HOUSE AT AMATO'S, DESIGNED BY ROTH SHEPPARD ARCHITECTS, LANDS 2011 DENVER MAYOR'S DESIGN AWARD

Recipient of Mayor's Design Award Gives Nod to Design Firm that Transformed a Denver Highland's Landmark into a Popular New Neighborhood Brewpub with the 'Best Views in Town'

DENVER, Colorado—October 26, 2011—Roth Sheppard Architects, the Denver-based award-winning AIA-Denver and AIA-Colorado '2010 Firm of the Year' known for designing some of Colorado's most popular restaurants and fast-casual eateries, today announced their client's acceptance of one of 15 2011 Mayor's Design Awards for the firm's design of the 'Ale House at Amato's' at 2501 Sixteenth Street in Denver's Highlands neighborhood.

"The Mayor’s Design Awards [MDA] celebrate design in many forms: bold and humble, gritty and polished, contemporary and traditional," states Carolyne Janssen of Mayor Michael Hancock's Community Planning & Development Office. "The MDA recognizes projects that enliven Denver because they are innovative, creative, beautifully designed or simply delightful!"

Janssen adds, "The award honors those who make design excellence a priority. We pay tribute to them for making our city provocative and memorable."

The MDA's general selection criteria highlight projects that: demonstrate sustainability; inspire good design; use design to highlight branding, heritage or ethnicity; emphasize an extraordinary use of the ordinary; honor the public realm; and feature creativity that goes above and beyond.

Ale House at Amato’s—located at the original site of the Amato's family-owned statuary business which has overlooked Denver's downtown since 1947—has been recognized within the Award category titled "Buildings That Beckon." The building's modernist redesign by Roth Sheppard, boasts a spacious two-story multi-roomed restaurant with two decks, a rooftop fire pit and stunning panoramic views of the City. Judges note that Ale House at Amato's was selected for: "demonstrating extraordinary curb appeal; engaging the street in a distinct manner; highlighting welcoming entries and display windows; incorporating generous, comfortable and active public spaces; and encouraging informal public gathering while promoting pedestrian activity."

Ed Cerkovnik, president of Breckenridge Holding Company adds, "Jeff Sheppard and his team at Roth Sheppard did a fantastic job designing the Ale House at Amato’s. They took a great piece of property that had some significant challenges and designed a streetfront showpiece for all of Denver. We are extremely proud of the overall design, look and feel of the Ale House and could not have won this award without their critical contribution to our success.”

The award ceremony will take place today, Wednesday, October 26th, at 6pm at the Mercury Café, 2199 California St., followed at 7pm by a reception for the winners to include a buffet of all-Colorado cuisine provided by owner Marilyn Megenity, a past MDA winner.
