HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT SOUTH GESSNER DIVISION

“I’m very proud of this new facility. It helps us with our core mission of protecting the public through better police/community relations. Thanks to its high visibility and community meeting room, residents will have an opportunity to get to know the officers working in their neighborhoods and partner with HPD to help make the area safer for everyone.”

—Chief McClelland, former Chief of Police

The original South Gessner facility operated out of a 5,000 SF ‘storefront’, not allowing for the delivery of modern police services, and posing a safety hazard to officers, arrestees, and the public. This facility provides the welcoming and engaging qualities necessary to emphasize the shift towards community-oriented crime prevention.

Houston South Gessner Division was designed to be a prototype for future HPD substations. The City of Houston asked for an economical, durable solution that would be the first of several subsequent department locations built to expand police services throughout the city.

The material palette was chosen for its aesthetic value, durability, and economy. At the secure entry, composite louvers create a sunscreen along areas with glass. This aids in mitigating heat gain inside the building, while still allowing in abundant daylight. The public lobby is defined by long-lasting interior finishes such as polished concrete floors, stainless steel counter tops, ballistic glazing, and composite planks. Tilt-up concrete panels were a cost-effective and durable material for the exterior shell. Choosing durable, timeless materials ensures the building can be a tool for the department far into the future.
